The Story Behind Forsan

The City of Forsan was established in 1929 after local settler Clayton Stewart donated land for the new townsite in 1928. Located in southeastern Howard County, approximately 14 miles southeast of Big Spring, Forsan quickly became part of the booming West Texas oil industry.

The community's name has a unique origin. Early geologists believed there were four productive oil-bearing sands beneath the area, leading to the name "Forsan," a shortened reference to "Four Sands." As drilling continued, it was discovered that there were actually at least five oil sands, proving the original estimate was conservative—but by then, the name Forsan had already become part of Texas history.

Like many West Texas communities, Forsan experienced rapid growth during the oil boom. By 1931, the town had grown to approximately 350 residents, with a post office and more than two dozen businesses serving the community. Throughout the following decades, the town remained a close-knit community while adapting to changes in the oil industry and the regional economy.

Between 1960 and 1966, Forsan officially incorporated as a city. Although the population gradually declined from its boomtown years, the community retained its City Hall, post office, local businesses, and strong sense of identity.

Today, Forsan continues to reflect the values that have defined it for generations—hard work, neighborly spirit, and pride in its West Texas heritage. While small in size, the city remains a welcoming community where history, tradition, and local leadership continue to shape its future.

Forsan Through the Years

  • 1928 – Clayton Stewart donates land for the future townsite.

  • 1929 – The community of Forsan is established.

  • 1931 – Population reaches approximately 350 residents, with a post office and 25 businesses.

  • 1936 – Population grows to approximately 400 residents.

  • 1960–1966 – Forsan incorporates as a city.

  • 1980 – Population recorded at 239.

  • 1990 – Population reaches 256.

  • 2000 – Population recorded at 226.

  • 2010 – Population recorded at 210 residents.

  • 2020 – Population recorded at 225 residents.

  • Today – Forsan remains a proud West Texas community with a rich oil heritage and a strong commitment to serving its residents.
